Chore Service caregiver

Donna W.

Caring for Kent residents since 2019

  • When I began looking for part‑time work, I wanted a job that fit around my children’s busy schedules and let me help people in a meaningful way. A friend told me about Chore Service and how it supports older adults who want to remain independent at home.  The more I heard, the more I felt drawn to the work — and it turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.

One of the most memorable moments in my time as a caregiver involved two clients who lived next door and had become close friends. During a long winter, their mobility declined, and they couldn’t visit as they had. They would ask me about one another, and I happily relayed their messages. When the weather finally warmed, I helped them outside so they could sit together on a bench in the sun. A week later, the gentleman passed away. My client was deeply grateful for that final visit, and the image of the two of them sitting side by side is something I will never forget.

What I love most about this work is that even the simplest moments can make a day meaningful. When I pull into a driveway and see a client waiting for me in the window, I already know the day will be a good one. Whether I’m running an errand or folding laundry, their smiles and heartfelt thanks remind me how important these small acts are. My clients know I’m there to help with whatever they need, and that connection is among the greatest rewards of caregiving.

The flexibility of my work with Chore fits perfectly into my life. I can schedule my visits around my family, and I never have to work on weekends or holidays, which is rare among caregivers. If something comes up and I need to adjust an appointment, my clients are always understanding. The Chore staff is incredibly supportive — easy to reach, responsive to concerns, and thoughtful in providing training, check‑ins, and appreciation events that make caregivers feel valued.

Over the years, I’ve learned that many older adults feel lonely, especially when family members aren’t nearby. While clients appreciate the tasks I help with, what matters most is often simply having someone to talk to. Sometimes the companionship we provide is just as important as the chores themselves.

I know my clients rely on Chore Service caregivers to help them stay in their homes, and being part of that support system means so much to me. Helping someone preserve their independence and dignity for as long as possible is the most meaningful work I can imagine.
