How We Help Our Neighbors

Essential Support for Independence at Home

Chore Service provides vital non-medical assistance that enables older adults and people with disabilities to maintain their independence and quality of life in their own homes throughout Litchfield County.

  • I moved to Salisbury about 30 years ago from Philadelphia, where I was working as Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. For many years, we had someone come in every couple of weeks—almost as a favor—and she became part of the family. She was with us for a long time, but eventually moved on to a full-time job.

We’ve worked with Chore Service two times over the years. Some time ago, a young man helped us with odd jobs around the house. Now we have our home cleaned every other week. The caregiver does an excellent job, and it makes such a difference in our lives. Having that reliable support takes a real weight off and allows us to enjoy our home.

  • I hadn’t heard of Chore Service until I came across one of their job postings on social media. Something about it immediately spoke to me. I remember thinking, “This is exactly the kind of work I want to do.” I called to learn more, and that simple step led to something truly meaningful.

There have been many memorable moments since then, but one that always stays with me is a client who stands in her doorway and claps when she sees me coming up the stairs. That small gesture puts a smile on my face every time and reminds me why this work matters. Every day feels worthwhile because I know I’m making someone’s life a little easier and bringing a bit of the outside world into their home.

One of the things I value most about Chore Service is its flexibility. Setting my own schedule lets me seamlessly balance caregiving with my daily life. Beyond that, this work gives me deep personal fulfillment and a sense of purpose. I build real relationships with the people I help, and those connections mean a lot.

Chore Service has been incredibly supportive from the start. They prioritize safety, offer training and supplies as needed, provide easy-to-use tools for tracking hours, and the management team is always available if I have questions. It feels good to know I’m backed by an organization that wants both clients and caregivers to succeed.

If someone is looking for meaningful work that truly helps others and has compassion, empathy, and a desire to make a difference, I’d wholeheartedly encourage them to consider Chore Service. This job gets me out of the house and into conversations, smiles, and moments of connection I wouldn’t find anywhere else. Most importantly, it allows me to support people as they age comfortably in their own homes, which is a gift I’m grateful to be part of.

Flexible hours. Meaningful work. Real impact.

  • When I began looking for part‑time work, I wanted a job that fit around my children’s busy schedules and let me help people in a meaningful way. A friend told me about Chore Service and how it supports older adults who want to remain independent at home.  The more I heard, the more I felt drawn to the work — and it turned out to be exactly what I was looking for.

One of the most memorable moments in my time as a caregiver involved two clients who lived next door and had become close friends. During a long winter, their mobility declined, and they couldn’t visit as they had. They would ask me about one another, and I happily relayed their messages. When the weather finally warmed, I helped them outside so they could sit together on a bench in the sun. A week later, the gentleman passed away. My client was deeply grateful for that final visit, and the image of the two of them sitting side by side is something I will never forget.

What I love most about this work is that even the simplest moments can make a day meaningful. When I pull into a driveway and see a client waiting for me in the window, I already know the day will be a good one. Whether I’m running an errand or folding laundry, their smiles and heartfelt thanks remind me how important these small acts are. My clients know I’m there to help with whatever they need, and that connection is among the greatest rewards of caregiving.

The flexibility of my work with Chore fits perfectly into my life. I can schedule my visits around my family, and I never have to work on weekends or holidays, which is rare among caregivers. If something comes up and I need to adjust an appointment, my clients are always understanding. The Chore staff is incredibly supportive — easy to reach, responsive to concerns, and thoughtful in providing training, check‑ins, and appreciation events that make caregivers feel valued.

Over the years, I’ve learned that many older adults feel lonely, especially when family members aren’t nearby. While clients appreciate the tasks I help with, what matters most is often simply having someone to talk to. Sometimes the companionship we provide is just as important as the chores themselves.

I know my clients rely on Chore Service caregivers to help them stay in their homes, and being part of that support system means so much to me. Helping someone preserve their independence and dignity for as long as possible is the most meaningful work I can imagine.
